Career Builders: Online Career Education Center

This page contains a list of what I call Best Career Builders: resources and links that I have personally found useful and would recommend to all professionals and executives who want a more focused way to undertake career research and/or enhance their career education and training.

Career Websites

This site gets my tick because it is a credible and authoritative one stop career center catering to college students, workers and HR personnel. Extra points for useful information like the Glossary of Key Career, Job-Hunting Terms, Top Job Categories and Career Resources page with handy job seeker tools such as Resume Distribution, Online Career Portfolio and Reputation Defender.

The official online job search resource hosted By Dick Bolles, author of What Color is Your Parachute?. The site is intended to be a supplement to the book. You will find valuable tips on how to use the Internet for job hunting related research.

Career Search Engines

An excellent career search engine not only lets you browse job vacancies by category (for example, location, keyword, industry, full-time or otherwise) and apply for jobs online, it usually also lists tools and resources that help you prepare for practical aspects of the job application process, such as career change resume writing, job interviews and negotiation tactics – how to ask for a salary increase at job promotion time.

Career Aptitude Tests

The Career Key is an online career test based on the Holland Code.

The Holland Code was created by psychologist John L. Holland, a respected contributor in the field of career counseling theory. His theory is that each of us has two or three dominant codes out of six personality and work environment types (usually referred to by their first letters: RIASEC).

After you complete the Career Key test, you will receive a three-letter code (e.g. A-S-E). This code gives you an insight into the occupations that most match your personality, plus you will also receive detailed information about each occupation and career ideas that help you move forward in your decision making process.

There is a fee for taking the online test.

For a free career personality test that is also based on the Holland Code, try the Career Interests Game by the University of Missouri.

Recommended Career Books

Richard Bolles’ What Color Is Your Parachute? 2010: A Practical Manual for Job-Hunters and Career-Changers

The book has been hailed “the gold standard of Career Guides” and is regularly updated. Richard Bolles is considered “the most recognized job-hunting authority on the planet”.

I would recommend it as compulsory reading for anyone who is job hunting or changing careers.

Stephen R. Covey’s books:

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

The 8th Habit Personal Workbook: Strategies to Take You from Effectiveness to Greatness

Dr. Covey’s books are about enhancing your personal effectiveness by working on yourself from the inside out, then finding a practical way to offer your gifts and abilities to make a difference in your relationships, your community and the world.

The 7th Habit is a useful guide not only for workers and career changers but for anyone who wants to live in a more conscious way and to relate better with others.

The 8th Habit, with its call to discover our voice and inspire others to find theirs, resonated with me in a powerful way when I was at my own career crossroad. I would say reading the book was one of a chain of serendipitous events that enabled me to write a new career story.

Daniel Goleman’s Working with Emotional Intelligence

This is one of those books I wish I had read early in my career. It would have saved me much angst and frustration.

Every employee, from the member of a team right up to the CEO, can benefit from understanding how to use emotions in an effective and intelligent way to make the workplace a more fulfilling and productive place to be in.
